The Sound of Coffee is a collaboration between Try Hard x Spokesman Coffee and The Octopus Project. Try Hard & Spokesman created an Ambient/Chaos blend of coffee & The Octopus Project created two unique songs/videos using a MIDI Biodata Sonification Device to translate a coffee plant's biodata into music and visuals.

The Sound of Coffee information

We worked with local Austin roaster, Spokesman Coffee and Austin-based musicians, The Octopus Project to bring you this fully immersive coffee and sound experience!

The Octopus Project captured the electricity of one of our very own coffee plants using alligator clips and Midi Biodata Sonification (cool, huh?!)...but what does that mean? Through this process, the electricity of the plant has been converted to midi data. Using synthesis, this data is converted into sound waves. Sound waves = music...and man, does this coffee plant jam hard!

In true Try Hard fashion, we wanted to over complicate this. We asked The Octopus Project to interpret the gathered data in a chill, ambient sound as well as a chaotic, intense sound. Some science, math, physics, and incredible musical talent later...the Sound of Coffee was created!

This release is back with two distinctly different coffees from the state of Veracruz, Mexico. HOWEVER -- We switched sides.

This coffee has flavors of sweet raspberry, pineapple, lemon, and pecan.

Try Hard interpreted CHAOS with a naturally-processed microlot from Pocitos Farm. This farm is located in the city of Cosautlan, 1400 meters above sea level. This unique H16 variety was dried for 30 days. The Cup of Excellence (COE) winning farm's coffee scored 88 points and was harvested in April 2021.

Spokesman interpreted AMBIENT with a microlot from Fatima Farm. Located in the city of Coatepec 1250 meters above sea level, this washed coffee underwent an extended fermentation of 72 hours in concrete tanks. This COE winning farm harvested this 100% Garnica variety coffee in February 2021 with a score of 86.

When blended, these coffees create balance in the cup, finding harmony amongst the ambient and chaotic.

This blend will be available through the remainder of 2021 online and in store!
